WINSLOW ARIZONA

Winslow Arizona features a selection of the images Stephen Shore presented in Doug Aitken’s 2013 project “Station to Station.”* Shore made the photographs in a single day while revisiting Winslow, AZ (where he made his seminal work American Surfaces forty years earlier). The pictures are ‘unedited,’ presented in the order in which he shot them, making this an improvisational work.

* For the project, which he called a “nomadic happening,” Aitken rented a train, which departed from New York and traveled to nine cities, including Minneapolis, through the southwest, and finally arriving San Francisco, in a three-week journey. He invited artists, writers, filmmakers, and performers to participate, and staged a “happening,” which involved exhibitions and performances, at each stop.
